I didn’t go back and rewrite or revise this book-it didn’t change. I think it says: you can do everything great, and it can still not work. How can talking about The Near Witch and its re-publication also serve as a lesson for young writers about the undue emphasis that’s placed on debuts, or the realities of building readership? So many aspiring writers follow and engage with me online, and so many say to me at events, ‘I love the way you talk about publishing, because it makes me feel less alone.’ So I decided I was going to be as honest as I could be, and I’ve been really, really surprised, in a good way, by the response. It feels like you’re struggling because you’re not good enough, instead of that you’re struggling because it’s hard. Because then when you do struggle, it feels like you’re an island. And I thought to myself: it’s so nice to know you’re not alone, but for those of us who are not usually in the company of other writers, it can be so lonely when all you hear is positives. Then I went to a writer’s retreat, and all the authors could talk about were the struggles. Roland brings Eddie back through the door so Eddie can hide the cocaine and get through a customs inspection, but the agents become suspicious and subject him to a lengthy interrogation and surveillance. The first door (labeled "The Prisoner") brings Eddie Dean, a young heroin addict in the process of smuggling cocaine into New York for the Mob boss Enrico Balazar. As Roland passes through these doors, he brings back the companions who will join him on his quest to the Dark Tower. Each door opens onto New York City at different periods in time (1987, 19, respectively). Feverish and losing strength, Roland continues north along the beach, where he eventually encounters three doors. His untreated wounds soon become infected. Roland wakes up on a beach, and he is suddenly attacked by a strange, lobster-like creature, which he dubs a "lobstrosity." He kills the creature, but not before losing the index and middle fingers of his right hand and most of his right big toe. The book begins less than seven hours after the end of The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger after The Man in Black has described The Gunslinger's fate using tarot cards. The story is a continuation of The Gunslinger and follows Roland of Gilead and his quest towards the Dark Tower. The series was inspired by Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came by Robert Browning. It is the second book in the Dark Tower series, published by Grant in 1987. The Drawing of the Three is a dark fantasy novel by American writer Stephen King. And since Caroline is currently on a self-imposed dating hiatus, and her neighbor is clearly lethally attractive to women, she finds her fantasies keep her awake even longer than the noise. Thanks to paper-thin walls and the guy’s athletic prowess, she can hear not just his bed banging against the wall but the ecstatic response of what seems (as loud night after loud night goes by) like an endless parade of women. The first night after Caroline moves into her fantastic new San Francisco apartment, she realizes she’s gaining an intimate knowledge of her new neighbor’s nocturnal adventures. In this book, Emezi manages to adhere to romance conventions, while turning all sorts of expectations on their head. What distinguishes novels of this genre is the skill with which an author innovates within the confines of a predictable narrative arc. This is romance, albeit with a large slice of grief and survivor’s guilt, so a happily-ever-after ending is expected - required, even. Emezi extends their interest in genre fiction, which has so far encompassed young adult fantasy, speculative fiction and poetry, but revisits recurring themes such as love, family, faith and identity. It’s really baked into the premise of a Darth Vader comic itself. This sheer overwhelming averageness was not the fault of the writers involved. You could read worse Star Wars comics – but you could also read much better ones. ‘Darth Vader and the Cry of Shadows’, ‘Darth Vader and the Ninth Assassin’, ‘Darth Vader and the Lost Command’ if you weren’t reading Star Wars comics at the time then you’ve probably never heard of any of these and frankly, you’re not missing much. Dark Horse gave it many tries over the years, from countless dedicated stories in Star Wars Tales and Empire to a series of Vader-focused miniseries, all of which were entirely, aggressively fine. It’s easy to forget this right now, as Marvel currently publishes its third consecutive well-received volume of a Darth Vader ongoing – not counting multiple miniseries – but they shouldn’t.
